Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about adult foster care, our services, costs and admissions.

General Questions

What is Adult Foster Care (AFC)?

Adult Foster Care provides 24-hour supervision and care in a home-like setting for adults who need help with daily living but do not require the level of care provided in a nursing home.

Who qualifies for Adult Foster Care?

Adults 18 or older who need supervision or assistance with personal care, or who have physical, mental, or developmental disabilities.

What services are included in Adult Foster Care?

Services typically include meals, medication management, personal care, housekeeping, transportation, and recreational activities.

How is Adult Foster Care different from a nursing home?

Adult Foster Care offers a smaller, more personal, home-like setting. Nursing homes provide skilled nursing and medical care in a more clinical environment.

Is Adult Foster Care regulated by the state?

Yes. AFC homes are licensed by the State of Michigan and must meet specific standards for care and safety. All Samaritan Homes are state-licensed.

Care & Services

What types of care do you provide?

We provide personal care such as bathing, grooming, and dressing, along with medication supervision, meal preparation, transportation, and social activities. See our Care Services page for the full list.

Are your caregivers trained or certified?

Yes. Our caregivers are trained in CPR, first aid, and medication administration. Every team member completes a background check and receives ongoing training.

Can residents have visitors?

Absolutely. Family and friends are encouraged to visit. We simply ask that visitors follow each home’s visitation guidelines to protect everyone’s safety and comfort.

What activities are available for residents?

Activities include games, music, crafts, gardening, exercise, and community outings.

Can residents bring their own furniture or belongings?

Yes. Residents are encouraged to personalize their rooms with their own furniture, décor, and belongings so it truly feels like home.

Cost & Payment

How much does Adult Foster Care cost?

Most costs are generally covered by Medicaid, administered through the county. Residents also pay a cost-of-care amount equal to their Social Security benefit minus their personal fund allowance.

Do you accept private pay clients?

Yes. We accept both private pay and Medicaid-eligible clients. Private pay is less common because of the cost of care.

Are there additional fees?

Some optional services — such as transportation for personal outings or specialty care — may carry an additional cost. We’ll always discuss these with you up front.

Admissions & Transition

How do I apply for placement?

Placement typically begins with the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN). Not sure where to start? Contact us and we’ll gladly point you in the right direction.

Is there a waitlist?

It depends on availability. We’ll share our current openings and can add you to a waitlist if needed.

Can a resident move to a higher level of care if their needs change?

Yes. We reassess each resident’s needs regularly and help arrange a higher level of care when it’s appropriate.

Can family members be involved in the care plan?

Yes — we encourage it. We work collaboratively with families to make sure each care plan reflects the resident’s needs and wishes.
